1776: George Washington’s Retreat through Bergen County
In November 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington led his troops through Bergen County as part of a strategic retreat following the loss of Fort Lee to British forces. Washington and his army crossed through towns such as Hackensack and Paramus as they retreated across New Jersey, narrowly avoiding capture by the British. This retreat was a key moment in the war, as it allowed the Continental Army to regroup and later launch successful counterattacks.
Washington’s retreat through Bergen County is significant for its role in preserving the Continental Army during a critical period in the war. As British forces pursued them, Washington’s army used the landscape and local support to their advantage. Local residents and militias aided the Continental Army by providing food, supplies, and information about British troop movements. Bergen County's geography, with its rivers and forests, also helped slow down the British advance, giving Washington time to reorganize.
The retreat through Bergen County was part of a larger military strategy that ultimately helped turn the tide in favor of the American cause. Washington’s leadership and the support of local communities during this difficult period were crucial to the eventual success of the Revolution. Today, several historical markers and sites in Bergen County commemorate the path of Washington’s retreat and its importance to American independence.
